Meet 1 Recap
Good Afternoon Crocs,
Canterbury had a great first meet at Hungary Creek. The coaching staff is so proud of all of our swimmers. We had so many new best times, champs qualifiers, and swimmers trying a new event for the first time. This week Canterbury won 7 out of 10 relays. This is a testament to our swimmers’ speed across all divisions and age groups. I would like to thank all the parents, volunteers, and swimmers for working through the delay before the relays and sticking with it to end the meet on a high note. This will hopefully be by far the latest meet of the year.
Behavior at Swim Meets
We had issues with several swimmers not respecting the Hungary Creek pool or its staff. Our swimmers are required to abide by the rules of the pool we are competing in and must listen to the pool’s volunteers, coaches, and lifeguards. The coaches will discuss this in practice as well but please talk to your swimmers about treating each pool and its staff with respect and following their rules. If this continues to be an issue, we may have to require all younger swimmers to stay with their parents unless they are swimming so please ensure we are being considerate guests.
Green Caps
Green Caps are given at the start of every meet to two swimmers who the coaches would like to recognize for their performance in practice, sportsmanship, and team spirit throughout the past week. This week the coaches would like to recognize Scarlett Francisco and Owen Marr.
Scarlett – “I feel like she has improved so much in the past few weeks and I can really tell that she not only listens to our advice but actively seeks to better from it. She is also a kid I can rely on to behave and listen even during the most chaotic times in practice.” – Coach Emily
Owen – “He’s been coming to practice a lot and he’s super kind and listens well too. I feel like anything I’ve said to him he tries to do and he was really sweet yesterday with his meet buddies. I think that’s what being a Canterbury swimmer is all about.” – Coach Claire
Coaches Highlights
Coach Zach – My favorite swim of the night goes to the 9-10 H relay with Reagan Bartlett, Patrick Verdi, Caris Brinkley Counts, and Emma Dmytriw. Not only did they swim very fast, but they also stayed and cheered on everyone else in the heat including a Hungary Creek relay still in the water. This was a great example of sportsmanship and embodies what it means to be a Canterbury Croc.
Coach Claire - My favorite swim of the meet was the 9-10 relays. We had a lot of people step up and swim when we needed them to. Most notably, Relay I, which consisted of Addison Crowe, Millie Trice, Gwyneth Hershey, and Davis Jung. These swimmers are all new to Canterbury this year and competed in their first relay and first swim meet! And Millie had to step in last minute! So proud of their great effort and positive attitude. Thank you to all our 9-10 swimmers for stepping up in such big ways!!
Coach Lizzie - My favorite swim was Emma Dmytriw 50 back. She was super nervous but went so fast and crushed it!
Coach Aidan - My swim of the meet goes to Addie Palmer. Her goggles fell off right when she dove in for her 50m Fly. She worked extremely hard to stay calm and finish the race. Her determination was eminent and I’m proud she was able to swim fast under those circumstances.
Coach Emily - My highlight was Ollie Trinh’s amazing 50 backstroke. Not only did he win his heat, but he did it all with a bee on his forehead. I was so proud of him for being so concentrated on the event that he didn’t even notice the bee, it truly shows how dedicated he was to his 50 back!
Coach Savannah - Mine is Beatrice Clark with her 25 fly. I’m not sure if that was her first time doing it but I could tell she was really excited and wanted to swim it. She was super pumped behind the blocks and wanted to get in the water as soon as possible!
Records
Maddie Bynum – Maddie broke a team record in every event she swam AND broke a GRAL record. Maddie broke the team records in the 11-12 50 meter fly with a time of 31.47 seconds, and 11-12 50 meter free with a time of 29.04 seconds. Maddie also broke the 11-12 GRAL record in the 100 meter freestyle with a time of 1:01.58 seconds. Congrats Maddie!
Hugh Harrell – Hugh broke Coach Aidan’s 11-12 50 meter breaststroke GRAL record with a time of 35.30 seconds. Congrats Hugh!
Hugh Harrell, Drew Hotem, Lane Jacobs, and Maddie Bynum – This relay broke Canterbury’s team record in the 11-12 200 meter freestyle relay by 6 whole seconds with a time of 2:00.01. Congrats all!
Congratulations everyone on a great meet. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me at [email protected].
GO CROCS!
Very Respectfully,
